You Beauty Discovery August 2014

Hello everyone! I hope you are having a lovely August so far. It’s time for my monthly update on my You Beauty Discovery box.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t too impressed with the selection of products this month. There always seems to be a lot of lip balms and anti-aging products. Eventually, I decided to just get the two different nail polishes on offer. I’ve never tried a Peggy Sage nail polish before, so it will be interesting to see what they are like. The colours are No. 751 Nude Poudré from the Nude Collection and No. 756 Sunny Sweetie from the Summer Collection.

As always, we got a few extra goodies. There’s a 4 in 1 nail buffer, which is good, because my nail files are quite worn now. There are also sample sizes of Jimmy Choo Eau de Parfum and Jimmy Choo Man Eau de Toilette. My fiancé will obviously be getting the man version! Finally, there’s a sachet of FaceD – 3-LURONICS Instant Effect Anti Wrinkle Cream Serum. This went straight in the bin if I’m honest. I’m so not interested in anti-wrinkle products at the moment!

Overall, not a bad box this month, but we’ve definitely had better!

February 2014 Favourites

Happy March! I hope February treated you well? So what have I been loving this month I hear you ask…

Urban Decay Naked 3 – What else could possibly be at the top of this favourites post other than my new Naked 3 eyeshadow palette? I don’t really need to say a great deal, other than it has the most beautiful rose gold shadows which are shimmery, highly pigmented and long lasting. I’m in love!

Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh – The horrible British weather is starting to subside in my air of the country, which makes me feel like spring is in the air. That has inspired me to reach for my Daisy Eau So Fresh perfume again. I know this has featured in a favourites post before, but now it’s back! I adore this scent, it is a really light, fresh, floral scent which lifts my mood every time I spritz it. It isn’t the best for staying power unfortunately, but the fragrance is gorgeous.

Collection Intense Colour Supersoft Kohl Pencil – I think this has probably featured on a favourites post before, but I have recently got back into it in a big way. It is quite easy to apply (it doesn’t glide on but it doesn’t require a lot of pressure either) but more importantly the staying power is fantastic. It gives me day long perfection on the upper lid and a good few hours on the waterline without needing to reapply. This, for me, is a miracle, as I seem to have super watery eyes. Better still, it’s super cheap!

V05 Smoothly Does It Frizz Free Creme – I seem to have been drying my hair quite a bit this month (usually I let it dry naturally) so I have been reaching for a styling product more often, and this is my current product of choice. It protects your hair from heat and tames frizzy, fly away hair. I smooth a bit over wet hair before blow drying. It doesn’t make my hair feel or look greasy, and I do think it makes a difference to how “poofy” my hair is after drying.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini Phone Cover – I have a new phone (at last!) so I needed a new cover. I headed over to trusty Amazon and settled on this one, which I think is just adorable. It has handy pockets inside to keep a card or cash in when you go out for the night (saves room in your bag for lipstick and a camera!). It also opens up and folds out to create a little stand to prop your phone up while you watch videos. If you are interested in this, or a similar one, you can have a look at Style Your Mobile on Amazon.

December/January Empties

I have gathered quite a stack of empties to share with you over December and January. I’ve been in the mood to use up lots of half empty things basically. As always, any products I have done full reviews of, I will only mention briefly, but the main review will be linked. I hope you enjoy!

Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector – good grief, this product lasted me one entire year! Now that’s what you call value for money. If only it didn’t stink so much.

Soap and Glory Flake Away scrub – I got this travel size pot of Flake Away in my Boots advent calendar and started using it straight away. Like all Soap and Glory products, it smells really sweet (“aromas of leafy greens, bergamot and mandarin, with floral and fruity middle notes, and a soft, sexy, musk, oakmoss, amber and woody drydown” according to the Boots website) which I really like. I’d say it’s more of a luxury product than a heavy duty scrub as the particles are very fine. It won’t revolutionise your skin care, but it will make you smell great!

Lush Catastrophie Cosmetic Fresh Face Mask – I was really pleased with this mask, but unfortunately it’s on the empty list by default. I always forget about the fresh face masks because they live in the fridge not in my bathroom. I think I only ended up using this once or twice. What a waste!

L’Oreal 3 in 1 Purifying Micellar Solution – I bought this product back when everyone in the beauty community started going crazy for it. It is supposed to remove makeup, unclog pores and tone the skin all at the same time. I found it irritated my eyes a little and made the skin of my eyelids quite sore. I also felt like my skin was never truly clean afterwards, so I didn’t rate it much.

Nina by Nina Ricci Perfume – This perfume has lasted me a whole year (my boyfriend bought it for me last Christmas) but I have sadly run out now. I’m sure it won’t be long till I repurchase it though. I really love Nina Ricci’s perfumes, they smell great, and their staying power isn’t too bad.

Rimmel Exaggerate Undercover Shadow Primer – This shadow primer wasn’t too bad actually. It stops the tell tale eyeshadow creasing that shows how long it was since you applied it. However, I don’t like the fact that the wand starts to look dirty after only a couple of uses (picking up the foundation around your eyes). It shows up all the more because it’s white. That makes it feel quite unhygienic and unappealing. I also found that it’s consistency changed towards the end of the tube, so it doesn’t last very long either.

Body Shop Raspberry Shower Gel – This stuff smells absolutely amazing. It’s definitely my favourite Body Shop scent so far; delicious!

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser – I’ve tried a couple of cleansers since finishing this and nothing’s as good, so I’ve already re-ordered it! Enough said!

L’Oreal Ever Riche Nourishing & Taming Shampoo and Conditioner – I really love the smell of these: rich and creamy like shea butter. The conditioner was absolutely fantastic, which surprised me because I am very picky when it comes to conditioner. The shampoo worked really well too but it didn’t knock my socks off.

Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Concentrated Hand Cream – This is the little hand cream that’s been in my hand bag for dry hand ’emergencies’. I really don’t like the formula and I definitely won’t be repurchasing!

Body Shop Shea Eau de Toilette

This is another of my Christmas gifts from my lovely boyfriend: the Body Shop Shea Eau de Toilette. I have worn it virtually every day since Christmas which is why there is visibly less than a full bottle in the picture! At first when you spray it, the eau de toilette has a very strong alcoholic smell, but that quickly fades into a gorgeous subtle nutty scent. It is sweet, without being sickly sweet, and earthy. It is honestly just so delicious, I can’t stop smelling it as I am writing it! The fragrance is really light, natural and fresh when you wear it. It’s perfect for day time wear – you’ll smell amazing but people won’t even realise you are wearing perfume.

My only disappointment is that the scent doesn’t last as long as I would like. However, I have heard that if you layer it over the Shea shower cream and/or the Shea body butter, the scent lasts a lot longer. I am keen to try that, although I might also try layering it over my Coconut or Chocomania body butters to see what exotic creation I can make! (I am Body Shop obsessed, not sponsored, honest!)

Taylor Swift Wonderstruck

Bear with me, I’m about to do a post about perfume. I am terrible at describing scents, so this may not be at all helpful to you, but I will give it my best shot!

I originally bought this Taylor Swift Wonderstruck fragrance as a gift for a friend, but I eventually decided it wasn’t right. Instead of being cheap and gifting it to someone else, I decided to keep it.

The first thing that struck me about this perfume was the packaging. It has some of the nicest packaging of any celeb perfume out there. I love the cute dangling charms from the bottle. Even the box itself is a work of art!

Due to my awful fragrance describing skills, I am going to share with you the Perfume Shop description. Apparently this fragrance has base notes of Amber, Sandalwood, Musk and Peach; heart notes of Hawaiian White Hibiscus, Honeysuckle, Mimosa Flowers and Vanilla Whoopie Pie; and top notes of Freesia, Green Tea, Apple Blossom, Raspberry and Dewberry. If, like me, that description means nothing to you, it’s basically an incredibly sweet, fruity scent, with the slightest hint of musk.

Generally I find that the celebrity, lower end, fragrances are very sweet and fruit, and the expensive, higher end, fragrances are very musky and/or floral. I generally prefer something in between like Nina Ricci, Vera Wang and Marc Jacobs fragrances. I do like this Taylor Swift fragrance, but it is something I would have to be in the mood for, rather than something I could happily spritz every day. It’s seriously sweet; if you don’t like sweet perfumes stay clear of this! If you do, you’ll probably like it. It’s one of the nicest, fruity fragrances I’ve smelt in a while.

Jo Malone: Peony and Blush Suede

I was ever so excited when an interesting looking package arrived in my mail box the other day. I just love receiving post! It turned out to be a sample of Jo Malone’s new Peony and Blush Suede fragrance which I had completely forgotten I asked for!

I love the whole feel of the promotional imagery they’ve used for this new fragrance, it feels really feminine and luxurious. Now onto the fragrance! I’m terrible at describing scents so I shall copy out Jo Malone’s description of Peony and Blush Suede:

“The essence of charm. Peonies in voluptuous bloom, exquisitely fragile. Flirtatious with the juicy bite of red apple and the opulence of jasmine, rose and gillyflower. Mingling with the sensuality of soft, blush suede. Luxurious and seductive.”

I have to say that I have completely fallen in love with this fragrance! It’s a really heavily floral scent but it’s still quite fresh thanks to the apple notes. It also doesn’t feel too mature or matronly like scents with rose in can often be. Even better, the fragrance lasts extremely well. I applied some this morning at 7.30am and I can still smell hints of it on my skin now.

The fragrance also has the seal of approval of a number of my male friends who were there when I opened it and said it smelt really nice – high praise indeed from a man!

Jo Malone Peony and Blush Suede is £39 for 30ml and £78 for 100ml

Beauty Wishlist: September

I wrote a wishlist post back in July and it really helped me to prioritise what some of my next purchases should be. From my last wishlist I have already bought Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish and raspberry shower gel from the Body Shop. There a lot of things I am lusting after at the moment so I think it’s probably about time I record some more wishes!

Lancome La Vie Est Belle Leggere Eau de Parfum

When I was strolling through Boots the other day looking for a new foundation, I spotted a promotion on the Lancome counter. When I went over to find out more, the assistant asked if I’d like to try some of this perfume. I of course said yes! She sprayed it on one of the usual cardboard perfume testers for me to smell. I was immediately in love! It has a really light floral fragrance – the main noticeable notes are Iris, Jasmine, Orange Blossom and Patchouli Essence – but it also has a sweetness to it that I normally associate with fruity perfumes. As I liked it so much, the assistant sprayed some on my skin and I can tell you, it lasted well into the evening and I could still smell it on my arm when I went to bed that night! It is definitely the longest lasting perfume I’ve ever tried!

No7 Stay Perfect Liquid Foundation

The logical next product to talk about is the No7 Stay Perfect Liquid Foundation seeing as it is the product I almost left with on the same perfume experiencing trip! I already have the No7 Essentially Natural Foundation in Warm Ivory, however for the wedding at the weekend I wanted something a bit longer lasting and, to be honest, I’m not entirely sold on the colour Warm Ivory. When I finally made it to the No7 counter, the assistant used her little electronic gadget to read my skin to help her work out the best colour for me. My reading gave two shades: Warm Ivory and Calico. I explained that Warm Ivory looks a bit orange on my skin and when she tried it she agreed. She recommended the Stay Perfect Liquid Foundation as the best foundation for long lasting coverage. Then she very kindly gave me a sample pot of this in the shade Calico with enough for a good three applications. Having used it I can say I really love it and it will definitely be the next foundation I buy.

Bourjois Cream Blush in Nude Velvet

Anyone who has been reading my posts over the last month or so will know by now that I have recently discovered Bourjois powder blushers and fallen in love with them. I honestly can’t believe that blusher wasn’t a staple product in my make-up routine until now. I’d now like to try different types of blushers to see which I prefer. In particular I have my eye on this cream blush from Bourjois as I think it looks like a really lovely, natural colour.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion

I fear that I am reaching the end of my Rimmel Exaggerate eyeshadow primer and, as I really can’t live without an eyeshadow primer now I’ve tried one, I’m on the lookout for another to try. I really like the Rimmel one, but I am always interested to try new things and see what else is out there. My natural choice would be an Urban Decay Primer Potion because I know so many people who use it and absolutely swear by it. I’m very tempted, but is it really worth the money?

Soap & Glory Hand Food

The last item on my list is a little cheaper than some of the others featured. The hand cream that sits on my desk at work is almost empty so I have been thinking about what I’d like to replace it with. I’ve heard a lot of people talk about Soap & Glory Hand Food and seen a lot of people use it so I’m wondering what the hype is about. I’ve even seen men using it so it must be good for them to look past the bright pink packaging! I’m not the biggest Soap & Glory fan at the moment, so I’d be interested to see if this could convert me!

That’s everything on my list for now, although I’m sure it won’t be long till I’ve thought of other things! What’s currently on your beauty wishlist?
