Body Shop Ginger Sparkle Shimmer Lotion

I was in two minds about whether to write a post on this product, as it isn’t available in the shops at the moment. The Body Shop’s ginger range was limited edition at Christmas 2013, which is when I was given this. In the end I decided to write this, partly because it is bound to be back next year and partly because you can get it on places like eBay and Amazon if you look hard enough.

The Ginger Sparkle Shimmer Lotion is very much exactly what it sounds like. It’s a ginger scented body lotion which leaves shimmer on the skin.

First thing’s first: scent. Boy is this one strong! It might have a picture of the gingerbread man on the front, but I wouldn’t say it really smells like that. It’s more like pure ginger, rather than the added Christmas spices. It’s a nice smell (if you like ginger) but it’s a bit of an odd scent to be rubbing on your skin. It’s definitely an acquired taste (and would have been much better to use at Christmas time than in March…).

Next, let’s talk sparkle. Does this shimmer? Why yes it does. You don’t notice when you initially apply it, but the minute you catch the light, your skin will glisten or shimmer, but not in an excessive way (that would look a bit silly). It would be great to apply before a night out to make you feel a bit more glam.

The lotion itself is an absolute dream to apply. It glides on super easily and absorbs within minutes. I find the Body Shop Body Butters leave the skin feeling a bit claggy for ages after, but you can virtually put your clothes straight on after using this. That makes me think it’s more of a product for the shimmer and Christmas sparkle than it is for hard core moisturising your product.

All in all, it’s not my favourite product in the world, but it would be great to get you in the festive spirit in the run up to Christmas and before a Christmas party. I think I am now going to put mine away till November. I look forward to getting it out again when I need some festive cheer!

December 2013 Favourites

SAM_1479Welcome to 2014! I can’t believe how quickly this year has gone and how much fun it was compared to previous years. I suppose one of my highlights for 2013 would have to be discovering blogging! I’m really enjoying it and I hope you are enjoying reading what I write!

In this post, I am going to share with you some of my favourite items from the last few weeks of 2013.

Mavala Nail Polishes – I have had the Mavala nail biting detterant for a long time, but I had never thought to try their polishes before. In fact, I didn’t even know you could buy them in the UK! Towards the beginning of December I was searching the Internet looking for the perfect green nail polish when I stumbled across Mavala Peacock Green. I bought it, tried it, and adored it. I then got two more in my advent calendar: London and Pure Diamond. These polishes last and last without chipping and their opacity is great.

Floral rings – I spotted these little flower rings in Accessorize a couple of days ago and picked them up for £6 each. I always wear the same ring on my ring finger, so I decided to buy them a little bigger so I can wear them on my index fingers or my thumbs. I think they are adorable!

Model Co Lip Enhancer Illusion Lip Liner – I am pretty new to lip liner. I’ve always stuck to nude shades in the past so I’ve never understood the necessity. This winter I have been getting more and more into darker lipsticks like red or wine, but struggled with the lipsticks bleeding and not looking very polished. I read online that you could use a nude lip liner if you don’t have the correct shade, so I dug this one out again. It makes all the difference; my lips look really professional and polished.

L’Oreal True Match Blush in True Rose – This is my go to blush at the moment because it lasts really well and it makes my skin look really fresh and glowing. I have linked my full review below.

Bourjois Smoky Eyes Trio in Rose Vintage – This month my obsession with rose gold shades has led me to put my trusty MUA Undressed and Heaven and Earth palettes to one side (save for the brown shadow for my brows) in favour of this gorgeous little trio. This creates the perfect subtle smoked eye for daytime wear. Again, my review of this product is linked below.

Yankee Candle Christmas Eve  – Finally, a real Christmas treat. I bought this for my best friend for Christmas and it smelt so good I decided I had to have one too. According to Yankee Candle, the fragrance is “Traditional Christmas scents of a warm hearth, sugared plums, and candied fruits”. It’s perfect for anyone who wants a warm winter fragrance but doesn’t like spicy or cinnamonny scents.

What I got for Christmas 2013

Hi all! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas! I love seeing what gifts people got so I thought I would share a few of mine with you. I have picked out some of the more beauty related gifts rather than showing you everything, because I figured I would tailor my post to my audience! I won’t talk about anything in a lot of detail and I’ll just show you some pictures. Enjoy!

Anyone notice the sexy YSL box? I have been thoroughly spoilt by my wonderful boyfriend and his sister, both of whom bought me YSL Rouge Volupte lipsticks. They are so beautiful! The colours are No 7 Lingerie Pink and No 17 Red Muse.

I am sorted for bath products for so long! It’s awesome! My grandma got me Sanctuary Spa Foaming Bath Soak and Sensuous Foaming Shower Burst which sounds so exciting. I also got a selection of the best (in my opinion) Lush products. Candy Mountain and The Comforter bubble bars, Snow Fairy shower gel and the Snow Fairy massage bar.

I got a tonne of really exciting Body Shop stuff from my boyfriend and my mum, including a Crackled Ceramic Oil Burner and Lavender home fragrance oil, coconut body butter, coconut scrub, Vitamin E cream, Peppermint Cooling Foot Lotion and Almond Hand and Nail Cream. I also got some super festive ginger lip balm and the Ginger Sparkle Shimmer Lotion which leaves your skin looking amazingly shimmery and glittery for party season.

Also along the body scrub line, I got a lovely big tub of Soap & Glory Breakfast Scrub which I am very excited to try.

In terms of make-up, I got a huge selection of different things to try. My Secret Santa bought me Rimmel Kate Moss Lipstick in shade No 2, Rimmel Wake Me Up Instant Radiance Shimmer Touch in Radiant Rose, and a huge selection of different nail polishes which I forgot to photograph including OPI Houston We Have A Purple and Rimmel Space Dust in Moon Walking. I also got a new Rimmel Apocalips Lip Lacquer in Stellar.

Finally, my boyfriend wanted you all to continue seeing exciting nail posts, so he bought me some special nail art pens and a nail art kit which has polishes, brushes, pens, rhinestones, glitter and a DVD!

Boots Beauty Advent Calendar Days 21-24

The day has finally come: time for my last advent calendar update. I am going to include my brief thoughts on the calendar as a whole at the end too.

On the 21st I got a sample of Boots Botanics Heat Protection Shine Serum. I’m interested to try this as I don’t use a lot of hair products at the moment. For once I don’t mind it being a Boots own product as it’s a little out of the ordinary and the Botanics range is quite nice in general.

Behind door 22 was a sample of Nails Inc polish in the colour Porchester Road. It isn’t something I would pick in a shop but actually it’s really nice and I wore it on Christmas Day with silver glitter over the top and it looked great. My only disappointment is the size – I don’t think a full size bottle would have broken the bank.

I’m very intrigued by this gift: Umberto Giannini Backcomb in a Bottle. I hadn’t heard of this before but it sounds really cool, it is supposed to give you the volume and effect of back combing without having to wreck your hair by actually doing it. I’m looking forward to trying it!

And finally, on December 24th I got a 17 (Seventeen) mascara. I was a bit surprised by this as I expected the best gift to be last. I’m sure this is great, but I think there were better gifts in the calendar.

So what were my overall thoughts? The calendar was a bit of a mixed bag. The nail polishes were a high point, as were the two Soap and Glory products. The Vichy samples are probably great for the older lady, but anti-aging is not something I think about yet. The low points were the terrible scrunchy and the perfume samples. I was looking forward to perfume samples but I was expected more than a tiny tube you could be given free in a magazine on any occasion. Overall I am glad I gave it a try, but I don’t think I would repurchase it next year as it didn’t wow me. I might look at getting a Benefit calendar next year instead.

Boots Beauty Advent Calendar Days 16-20

I can’t quite believe how deliciously close we are to Christmas! It is so exciting! My post today is another advent calendar update because you seem to be enjoying them!

When I first opened door number 16 I was a little disappointed because the gift was just a bog standard nail file. However, it actually turned out to be quite useful when I snapped a nail mere hours later!

I am thrilled with what was behind door 17 though: a travel size pot of Flake Away scrub from Soap & Glory. I had never tried this before but I am really loving it; it smells divine!

On the 18th I got yet another disappointing perfume sample. This one was a different fragrance by Ghost. It excited me so little I don’t even remember what it was.

A lot of people really rate Carmex lip balms so I was excited to try this, however it just made my lips burn! Is it supposed to do that?

I am so excited to show you this one! Door number 20 revealed a gorgeous Mavala nail polish: Pure Diamond. I can’t wait to wear this, Mavala nail polishes are amazing!

Lush Secret Santa Bath Bomb

I am a sucker for a Lush Christmas bath bomb, so when I spotted the Secret Santa bath bomb recently, I decided I wanted to try it because it’s adorable!

The bath bomb is modelled on the original Lush shop, 29 Poole High Street. Supposedly created to emulate the scent inside the shop, this bath bomb smells of a mixture of Ylang Ylang, Sandlewood, Indian Jasmine and Lime. The best feature has to be the fragrance created by this mix. It’s very relaxing and luxurious. It’s sweet without being sickly sweet, and floral without being overpowering.

The bath bomb initially turns the water orange, and then red towards the end. Lush suggest that you cut this bath bomb into pieces, but it would never occur to me to do that to a bath bomb, even though I do with the bubble bars. I can imagine a big crumbly mess. I used the bath bomb all in one go, and I must say it probably lasted less time than any other bath bomb I have used. There is also supposedly a miniature red Father Christmas bath bomb inside, but I didn’t notice this. I noticed the red colour, but certainly no shape to it. Perhaps you would if you split it open.

Overall, I was disappointed with this bath bomb. It is a fair bit more expensive than the other Lush bath bombs and I’m not really sure how it is justified. I didn’t think it was worth the price and I probably won’t be purchasing this one again, although it would be lovely as a gift for someone, because it does smell very nice.

Boots Beauty Advent Calendar Days 11-15

It’s that time again! A little later than planned, here is days 11-15 of my advent calendar!

This is a sample of Ghost perfume. I gave it a sniff and I wasn’t impressed!

Day 12 was a little disappointing. It was a Boots own polish to give shiny, glossy nails. I am not a label snob by any means, but from a luxury advent calendar I expect something a little nicer. I haven’t used this yet so it might surprise me.

Behind Door 13 was the Vichy LiftActiv Serum 10 for eyes and lashes. It is designed to reduce the appearance of aging by combating lines and wrinkles. I wouldn’t say I am their target market, but I might give it a go any way.

Day 14 was a Juicy Couture perfume sample which I haven’t tried yet.

And finally for this post, my 15th beauty treat is the Seventeen Tattoo Me, 48 hour eyeliner. I’m a bit sceptical about this. How can it really last 48 hours without smudging? What happens if you go wrong; can you get it off?

Christmas NOTD

It’s that time of year again – Christmas. I just love it. I decided to get in the mood for present wrapping by creating some festive nails!

I started with two coats of red polish. I used the Mavala London polish which I got in my Boots 24 Days of Beauty advent calendar. Next, I used Sellotape to make a straight line just under half way down my nail. I then painted two coats of Mavala Peacock Green onto the bottom half. Once this was dry, I paint the tips of my nails with Collection Hot Looks in Aztec Gold. I used some french manicure nail guides to help create the right shape. Overall I am pleased with the finished look, but as the green and gold polishes are quite shimmery, I wish the red was too so that it matched better.

Let me know what you think!

Boots Beauty Advent Calendar Days 6-10

I can’t believe how quickly December is going. It’s literally flying by at a scary pace! So here’s another update on the goodies I have received in my advent calendar – doors 6-10.

First up is the product I am most excited about from this batch: Vichy Idealia Life Serum. This is designed to improve the overall appearance of your complexion by tightening your pores and making your skin look more even. I haven’t been using it long enough to see a difference really, but I like the smell!

My 7th gift was another perfume sample; again I am not too impressed by the fact it is a cheap free sample size. This perfume is Black Xs by Paco Rabanne, which is something I really didn’t expect to like, but I do! It has a nice floral scent but is still quite young and fruity at the same time, if that makes any sense…

The least said about this one the better. I mean seriously, I paid £30 for this calendar and you are giving me a cheap crappy hair bobble? This went straight in the bin and I am seriously unimpressed Boots!

Day 9 saw a bit of an improvement on day 8 as I opened the door to find a pretty hot pink nail polish from the Seventeen Supreme Shine collection. I haven’t used one of their nail polishes before, but a friend on Instagram tells me they are quite underrated, so I am looking forward to giving this a go.

Finally is another product I am excited about: the Orly Bonder base coat. The fact that it has a rubberised formula is supposed to help your nail polish to adhere to it and last longer. I shall let you know how I find it.

That’s it for now. Check back in a few days time to see what is behind doors 11-20!

My Christmas Gift List

It’s only a couple of weeks till Christmas so I thought I would put together a collection of suggestions for Christmas presents perfect for the lady in your life if you are still struggling for ideas.

For a real make-up addict, you can’t go far wrong with an Urban Decay Naked Palette. If you can get your hands on it, why not try pre-ordering the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette. However, if your budget doesn’t stretch that far, I think the Urban Decay Naked Basics palette is lovely and something every girl would love.

A lot of beauty and make-up gift sets look a little rubbish and like you have put no effort in, however, Benefit have some adorable little sets that would make lovely presents.I particularly like this Feelin’ Dandy lip & cheek kit gift set.

Anyone who regularly commutes, particularly in London, will know that the ticket and Oyster card holders you are given are very boring and not very inspiring for something you use every day. I think a really beautiful ticket holder can be a great gift for someone who travels a lot. I love the adorable range from Cath Kidson and have one myself: Cath Kidson Ticket Holder.

If you are buying a gift for an avid book reader, why not try something quirky like a print based on their favourite book? Some of my favourites can be found on Not On The High Street, like this Gone With The Wind print.

Yankee Candle have some amazing candle gift sets, including this 12 Sampler Christmas Book set which has 12 small Christmas scented candles to make the recipient feel extra Christmassy. The scents are Christmas Eve, Snow In Love, Red Apple Wreath , Apple and Pine Needle, Christmas Cookie, Sparkling Cinnamon, Sugared Apple, Cranberry Ice, Christmas Rose, Snowflake Cookie, Merry Marshmallow, and Christmas Memories.

Finally, and also on Not On The High Street, for someone who likes getting creative, why not try this adorable Make Your Own Lip Balm Kit. At £15 it’s a real bargain and gives you all you need to make 5 different lip balms. Alternatively, you could make them yourself and distribute to five different friends as little stocking fillers.

I hope you enjoyed this little post and that it gave you some inspiration. Christmas shopping is probably my favourite part of the Christmas period! I love hunting for those perfect little gifts for the people I love.  🙂
