Empties March-May 2014

First up, apologies for the rubbish quality of the picture, I took it on my phone with bad lighting. As you can see, I have collected a pretty big stack of empties over the last couple of months, so I thought it was about time I talk you through it!

Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder – This is my go to powder because it’s reasonably priced and keeps me matte for long periods of time, without making my makeup look caked on.

No 7 Stay Perfect Foundation – My absolute favourite foundation. I had repurchased before I ran out because I can’t bear to be without it!

Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau so Fresh – I adore the scent of the this perfume; it’s so sweet and light and floral. I just wish it lasted a little better. Perhaps using it in conjunction with the body cream is the answer.

Skin care

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser – Yes there are in fact two empty tubes of this. I use it every day and sometimes twice a day. That might make it look like it doesn’t last well, but one tube will last me a good two months on average.

Body Shop Soothing Peppermint Foot Scrub – A really nice peppermint foot scrub to make your feet feel smooth and soft for summer. It was noticeable when I stopped using this over the winter how much more dead skin I seemed to have. Warning that this does dry up after a few months.

Body Shop Vitamin E Moisture Cream – I really like the scent of this and it doesn’t break me out at all, but it is quite thick and I generally prefer a lighter moisturiser.

La Roche-Posay Effaclar AI – This is a life saver if you suffer from breakouts. It helps clear up spots more quickly and can sometimes prevent a spot developing if you catch it early. I can’t imagine life without this now.

Hair care

V05 Smoothly Does It Frizz Free Creme – I swear by frizz ease creams for when I blow dry my hair because it gives some heat protection and definitely makes my hair less poofy. I quite liked this one and would consider re-purchasing

Yankee Candle Christmas Eve – This smelt so unbelievably good and to be honest I just can’t wait till Christmas to buy it again, assuming they bring it back!

Yankee Candle Black Coconut – This smelt incredible in the shop when I sniffed it, but when it was actually burning I was disappointed. It didn’t have a very strong or lasting scent so it wasn’t really a worthwhile purchase.

And another red berry candle which I can’t remember the name of. I liked it though.

Body Shop Vitamin E SPF 15 Moisture Lotion

I always like to use skin care products for a while before I tell you about them, because so often your skin can take weeks to adapt to a new product, so it’s hard to really get a feel for what they are like. I’ve now been using this moisturiser for several weeks so I thought I’d write a post about it!

I bought the Body Shop Vitamin E SPF 15 Moisture Lotion because I really enjoyed the smell and effect of the Body Shop Vitamin E Moisture Cream, but I ideally want SPF in my day time moisturiser, so it seemed perfect.

The moisturiser is very lightweight, much lighter than the Moisture Cream, but it isn’t too wet or watery. I normally prefer thicker moisturisers over lotions, but actually I really like the texture of this. It’s super easy to apply because it just glides on to your skin, but it also absorbs quite quickly, and I don’t have to wait ages to apply my make-up in the morning. It doesn’t make my skin feel greasy or wet throughout the day.

This product hasn’t broken me out and my skin feels in lovely condition, so I’d say it’s definitely adding that much needed moisture into my face.

The lotion also contains SPF 15 for UVA and UVB protection. We all know by now that it’s really important to protect your face with an SPF, so it’s really great to have it in your daily moisturiser. Basically, this product is great and I am loving using it!

Summer Wishlist 2014

It’s been ages since I’ve done a wishlist post, largely because I have been completely spoilt rotten over Christmas and my birthday and have got virtually everything I could think of. However, as Summer is just around the corner, I have put my thinking cap on and come up with some things I would love to have tried by the end of the Summer. Perhaps it will give you some ideas of products to try!

Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede Candle – I have the Peony & Blush Suede cologne by Jo Malone and it is just so delicious smelling – floral and fruity and fresh all at the same time. Why wouldn’t I want my house to smell like it to? I am also just a total candle junkie.

Nars Orgasm Blush – A friend let me try this a year ago and I have been wanting to purchase it ever since. It was basically the first blush which made me realise I can look good with blush! I’ve never looked back. It’s such a gorgeous shade and looks amazing for a night out.

Michael Todd Pumpkin Mask – After I had a complete disaster using Glam Glow’s Supermud mask (it completely broke me out like crazy) I am keen to get back on the horse and try another mask. I remember hearing great things about Michael Todd from Fleur de Force so I’d love to try it. The Pumpkin Mask in particular is supposed to be great for controlling problem skin.

Body Shop Vitamin E Hand and Nail Treatment – The other thing I am a junkie for is hand cream. I use it all the time, often more than once a day, otherwise my hands get dry and feel horrible. I really like the Body Shop Vitamin E range for the face, so I figure why not try the Hand and Nail Treatment?

Lush Turkish Delight Shower Smoothie – This is a body cleanser for in the shower which has a lovely rose scent. I haven’t tried any of the Lush Shower Smoothies yet, but I’d love to, especially as I can’t take baths so much any more. I think it would make my shower routine a bit more luxurious on days when I don’t just want to be in and out of the shower as quick as possible.

Soap and Glory Orangeasm Body Wash – I smelt this in the Boots the other day and I thought it smelt great. It’s much fruitier and fresher than a lot of Soap and Glory’s usual scents, so it will be interesting to try it out! Also, got to love that name!

May 2014 Favourites

Body Shop Early-Harvest Raspberry Eau de Toilette – There’s not an awful lot I can say about this product except oh my goodness it smells so unbelievably good! Seriously, I just want to spray it everywhere all the time.

L’Oreal Super Liner Brow Artist – I got this 3-in-1 eyebrow pencil to use as an alternative to brown eyeshadow to darken my brows. I was hoping it will last a bit better in hot weather, which it seems to be so far. It has a brown pencil to darken, a small brush to shape with and tidy, and a wax to set the look. I love the effect it creates and it’s super easy to use.

Rimmel Stay Matte Long Lasting Pressed Powder – It’s been uncharacteristically warm in England recently which is lovely but means shine galore. Thankfully, I have my Rimmel powder on hand to help me out. It instantly mattifys my skin and lasts a pretty long time too. Life saver!

Lycon Spa Ingrown-X-It Solution – I bought this product to try on recommendation by a beauty therapist. It is designed to very mildly exfoliate, minimise the appearance and discomfort of ingrown hairs, and moisturise and smooth skin. You spray it on to dry skin after waxing and shaving and gently massage it in. It’s really helped me out recently so it was worth every penny!

Robinsons Squash’d – When I first saw the new Robinsons Squash’d, I thought what on earth is that and why would I need it in my life? Well it’s a small pot of highly concentrated squash you can keep in your bag and take with you to add a squeeze to some water wherever you are. It comes in a bunch of different flavours and has no added sugar. This is going to be a life saver this summer for me because I don’t like to drink a lot of plain water, but it’s hard to find squash in the usual kinds of places you buy a bottle of water. Now I can buy water and just add a squirt of this, instead of constantly drinking coke and other naughty fizzy drinks.

Body Shop Satsuma Body Polish

I bought this product the other week when I went shopping in Cambridge, because I’ve had my eye on it for a while.

So what is a body polish? Well the Body Shop promises that this will gently buff away dead skin cells to leave the skin feeling soft and smooth. Having used this, I’d describe it as a hybrid between a shower gel and an exfoliating scrub. It is thick and gel like like a shower gel, and foams up in the same way, but it has small gritty particles in it like a scrub.

I’ve enjoyed using this a lot so far. Because of the squeezy bottle and the texture of the product itself, it’s really easy to use it all over your body without dropping it all over the bottom of your shower or making a mess. I wouldn’t say I’ve seen a huge difference in my skin, but touching it now it feels smooth and soft, so perhaps it is working without my realising.

The only slight disappointed is the smell. I adore the Body Shop Satsuma range because it smells so good. Really fresh and fruity and citrusy. However, the smell of this polish is like a super intensified version of the shower gel smell which I find a bit overpowering.

Other than that, this is great!

Haul: Hollister, Boots and Body Shop

I had another cheeky trip to the shops at the weekend so I thought I’d share what I bought with you. I know how you all love a good haul.

One of the main reasons I went to the shops was to go to Hollister to buy a new hoody. My old one has decided not to stay zipped up anymore. It sort of slides back down as you walk or move. I had set myself a tricky task it seems because all the summer stuff was out, so I didn’t have a lot of choice. Unfortunately, no one has told the weather that it’s summer, hence why I need a hoody.

Anyway I manged to find a nice tight fitting navy hoody. It has a fluffy lining making it feel super cosy, like a warm cuddle. The only thing I don’t like is the sequins spelling out California. I think i might unpick them. What do you think?

The other reason I went to the shops was to get some bits from Boots. In particular, a new wash bag because I haven’t brought any to Cambridge and now I find I need one for a trip to London. I bought one large one for general toiletries and a smaller one for makeup. I also bought some of the usual miniatures you need for a trip away.

However, as always I am unable to take a trip to Boots without stopping to get some makeup. I was instantly attracted to the L’Oréal Colour Riche Smokey Eye Quad palettes – all the colours you need in one compact. Gorgeous packaging too. I bought the shade Nude Lingerie. Finally, I was queueing for the till when I spotted the Benefit Happy Beauty Day box of miniatures. It was £9.50 for miniature sample sizes of the Porefessional primer, BADgal mascara and Posie Tint blush. I had wanted to try the Porefessional in particular for ages so I thought, oh what the hell, I’m going to get this set!

Lastly, I accidentally found myself in Body Shop and went a little bit mad. I bought a bunch of new things to try – Satsuma Body Polish, Vitamin E SPF 15 Moisture Lotion, and Early Harvest Raspberry Eau de Toilette (which smells incredible)  – as well as some new exfoliating gloves. I also bought myself another oil for my oil burner because I am obsessed with it at the moment. I went with Pomegranate and Raspberry which smells so fruity and delicious.

After lunch in Pret a Manger and stocking up on wedding magazines I dragged myself home feeling very successful!  Have you spotted any things you’d like to try?

Body Shop Ceramic Crackled Oil Burner

SAM_1790 - Copy

My lovely boyfriend got me a Ceramic Crackled Oil Burner from Body Shop for Christmas and I’ve been using it a lot recently to make my new bedroom feel more like a home, so I thought it was about time I talk about it.

The idea is that you fill the little well at the top half full with water and add a few drops of home fragrance oil. I am using the Body Shop Lavender Home Fragrance Oil which has a lovely sweet floral scent. Then pop a tea light inside the burner and light it. The heat of the candle will warm the oil and release the fragrance.

I am enjoying this for two reasons, firstly I love the warm, gentle fragrance it releases. It’s the kind you don’t necessarily notice all the time, but occasionally you move and it wafts over you. The lavender fragrance is really comforting and homely. Secondly, I think it’s a gorgeous little ornament, lit or unlit. It adds a little touch of class to your shelf or bedside table and, when it’s lit, a warm glow.

My only warning would be to keep an eye on it and blow out the tea light when the water level gets too low. You should ideally only burn the tea light for 20 minutes, but I kind of ignore that most of the time. Also be careful of your surfaces and consider using a placemat to protect them. The burner gets quite hot and could damage them.

Can anyone now recommend me more home fragrance oils to use in my burner?

Body Shop Ginger Sparkle Shimmer Lotion

I was in two minds about whether to write a post on this product, as it isn’t available in the shops at the moment. The Body Shop’s ginger range was limited edition at Christmas 2013, which is when I was given this. In the end I decided to write this, partly because it is bound to be back next year and partly because you can get it on places like eBay and Amazon if you look hard enough.

The Ginger Sparkle Shimmer Lotion is very much exactly what it sounds like. It’s a ginger scented body lotion which leaves shimmer on the skin.

First thing’s first: scent. Boy is this one strong! It might have a picture of the gingerbread man on the front, but I wouldn’t say it really smells like that. It’s more like pure ginger, rather than the added Christmas spices. It’s a nice smell (if you like ginger) but it’s a bit of an odd scent to be rubbing on your skin. It’s definitely an acquired taste (and would have been much better to use at Christmas time than in March…).

Next, let’s talk sparkle. Does this shimmer? Why yes it does. You don’t notice when you initially apply it, but the minute you catch the light, your skin will glisten or shimmer, but not in an excessive way (that would look a bit silly). It would be great to apply before a night out to make you feel a bit more glam.

The lotion itself is an absolute dream to apply. It glides on super easily and absorbs within minutes. I find the Body Shop Body Butters leave the skin feeling a bit claggy for ages after, but you can virtually put your clothes straight on after using this. That makes me think it’s more of a product for the shimmer and Christmas sparkle than it is for hard core moisturising your product.

All in all, it’s not my favourite product in the world, but it would be great to get you in the festive spirit in the run up to Christmas and before a Christmas party. I think I am now going to put mine away till November. I look forward to getting it out again when I need some festive cheer!

Body Shop Vitamin E Moisture Cream

The Body Shop Vitamin E Moisture Cream was a Christmas gift from my boyfriend which I started using in the last few weeks after finishing my last moisturiser. It is a daily moisturiser designed to hydrate and protect the skin. It is one of Body Shop’s bestselling products.

The Vitamin E Moisture Cream has a gorgeous floral scent, a little like roses. It has a medium consistency, not light like a lotion, but not thick like cold cream. It spreads really easily, a little goes a long way, and importantly doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy. It absorbs pretty quickly actually.

So what effect has it had on my skin? Well I have been really pleased with it as it has been leaving my skin feeling really soft and smooth. I also think it looks a bit healthier and perhaps more even in tone. Is that possible from a moisturiser? Anyway I am really enjoying it, and I would definitely consider repurchasing.

Body Shop Almond Hand & Nail Cream

I wasn’t expecting to write a post on this because I reviewed the Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector not so long ago (linked below), however I decided this was different enough that it warranted it’s own post.

You may remember that I liked the Hemp Hand Protector, but wasn’t keen on the smell. Turns out my boyfriend hated the smell even more than me and decided to buy me this Body Shop Almond Hand & Nail Cream because it smelt better and he wouldn’t have to put up with Hemp any more!

The Almond Hand & Nail Cream contains sweet almond oil and panthenol to moisturise your skin, condition your nails and create a lovely sweet almond scent. It reminds me very much of marzipan!

Whereas the Hemp Hand Protector is very thick as hand creams go, the Almond Hand & Nail Cream is much lighter and wetter, but it still absorbs quite quickly into the skin and doesn’t leave my hands feel sticky or clammy. It definitely keeps my dry skin at bay and works just as well as the Hemp Hand Protector did. I am very impressed and pleased I don’t have to put up with an unpleasant smell to get good results. I haven’t used it long enough to see a real change to the condition of my nails, but I’ll update this if I do.
