Testing Products Part Three

This is the third, and long time coming, instalment of my Testing Products series of posts. You can read Part One and Part Two if you enjoy this or fancy seeing what else I have tried out. Anyone got any ideas for a better title for this series? I have been trying to think of something clever and witty but I can’t.

Lush It’s Raining Men Shower Gel – I got a tiny sample of this when I did a Lush order online, and it smelt so incredible I got a bigger version to take to a hotel with me. It smells so incredible – sweet and creamy like caramel or toffee. Totally delicious.

Lush American Cream Conditioner – I smelt this in a Lush store in London and convinced myself I had to try it because I needed conditioner. It’s a totally gorgeous sweet vanilla smell which reminds me of cupcake frosting – gorgeous. Unfortunately the formula just doesn’t work for me. It doesn’t seem to go very far and it doesn’t feel like it does anything to my (very) thick, long hair. It’s such a shame because it smells delicious.

Melvita Moisture Replenishing Night Nectar – This night time moisturiser was in my You Beauty Discovery box a few months’ ago. It suits my skin nicely because it isn’t too thick, it absorbs quickly, and it doesn’t give me oily skin or make me break out. Unfortunately, it has a really peculiar smell which I don’t like at all, so I won’t be re-purchasing it.

Clinique All About Eyes – I was given a sample of this in my local Boots when I purchased some Clinique products. I don’t use an eye cream yet because I feel a bit young, so I was interested to try this. I was surprised that it didn’t irritate my usually very sensitive eyes at all, and it was quite refreshing if I was tired or had sore or dry skin under my eyes. I’m not really sure I want to start regularly using an eye cream yet, but this is one I would definitely consider when I do.

Clinique Superprimer Universal Face Primer – This primer is easy to apply and works perfectly well – I think it makes my makeup last longer than it would without it – but I just don’t love it. I can’t really put my finger on why. It just didn’t wow me, so I will stick to Benefit The Porefessional for now.

Inika Mineral Eyeshadow in Gunmetal – This was another You Beauty Discovery box product. It’s a fabulous silvery-grey metallic colour with a lot of shimmery glitter in it. It’s easy to apply with a finger and looks very effective. It would be great for a night out. However, be warned, it’s a loose powder and it goes everywhere, and generally where you don’t want it, like on your clothes!

Caudalie Divine Legs Tinted Lotion – I decided to use this out of curiosity because so many people seem to adore it. I usually stay far far away from tanning products and simply embrace my English rose complexion (i.e. permanently pale). It is scarily dark when you first apply it to your skin, but it buffs down to a nice pale brown (not orange) colour, which looked very natural even on my very pale skin. It also washed off super easily. If I was the kind of person who used tanning products, I’d definitely reach for this.

Just when you thought we were done, I remembered one sample I left out of the original photo: Glam Glow Supermud Clearing Treatment. I was unbelievably excited to try this product because Glam Glow are a really expensive brand and their products are supposed to be amazing. Unfortunately, my experience of it was a complete disaster. The day after I used it, I broke out BIG TIME. I must have got about 12 new spots overnight. I know it was probably because the mask cleared out all the grime in my pores and brought out the spots to purge it, but who wants that? I’ve been way too terrified to use it since, so it’s going in the bin. How disappointing!

HER 300 Trecento Revitalising Hair Treatment

I had never heard of the brand HER until I saw it on the list of possible products for my You Beauty Discovery box. Nothing else particularly excited me so I thought I would give this a try.

Turns out HER is a haircare brand co-created and co-owned by John Barrowman. The products are designed to combat the effects of daily styling, air conditioning and environmental factors.

The 300 Trecento Revitalising Hair Treatment is a weekly deep conditioning treatment clinically proven to rebuild and repair dry/damaged hair. What makes it unusual is that it is designed to be used before shampooing and conditioning your hair. I don’t know about you, but I am used to deep-conditioners being for after shampooing. To use Trecento, you rub a 50p sized amount into damp hair from mid-lengths to ends, leave for 300 seconds (5 minutes) and rinse.

I find this a bit awkward to use, as generally I don’t want to pfaff with dampening my hair and waiting five minutes before showering. However, the treatment smells nice – a creamy, cocoa butter smell with perhaps a hint of vanilla. It doesn’t feel thick or creamy in my hair, more the consistency of a Lush conditioner.

So I suppose the question is have I seen a change in the condition of my hair? Honest answer is no. I wanted to, honestly, but I really haven’t noticed any difference. To my mind, this doesn’t do enough to be worth the extra hassle.

Empties March-May 2014

First up, apologies for the rubbish quality of the picture, I took it on my phone with bad lighting. As you can see, I have collected a pretty big stack of empties over the last couple of months, so I thought it was about time I talk you through it!

Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder – This is my go to powder because it’s reasonably priced and keeps me matte for long periods of time, without making my makeup look caked on.

No 7 Stay Perfect Foundation – My absolute favourite foundation. I had repurchased before I ran out because I can’t bear to be without it!

Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau so Fresh – I adore the scent of the this perfume; it’s so sweet and light and floral. I just wish it lasted a little better. Perhaps using it in conjunction with the body cream is the answer.

Skin care

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser – Yes there are in fact two empty tubes of this. I use it every day and sometimes twice a day. That might make it look like it doesn’t last well, but one tube will last me a good two months on average.

Body Shop Soothing Peppermint Foot Scrub – A really nice peppermint foot scrub to make your feet feel smooth and soft for summer. It was noticeable when I stopped using this over the winter how much more dead skin I seemed to have. Warning that this does dry up after a few months.

Body Shop Vitamin E Moisture Cream – I really like the scent of this and it doesn’t break me out at all, but it is quite thick and I generally prefer a lighter moisturiser.

La Roche-Posay Effaclar AI – This is a life saver if you suffer from breakouts. It helps clear up spots more quickly and can sometimes prevent a spot developing if you catch it early. I can’t imagine life without this now.

Hair care

V05 Smoothly Does It Frizz Free Creme – I swear by frizz ease creams for when I blow dry my hair because it gives some heat protection and definitely makes my hair less poofy. I quite liked this one and would consider re-purchasing

Yankee Candle Christmas Eve – This smelt so unbelievably good and to be honest I just can’t wait till Christmas to buy it again, assuming they bring it back!

Yankee Candle Black Coconut – This smelt incredible in the shop when I sniffed it, but when it was actually burning I was disappointed. It didn’t have a very strong or lasting scent so it wasn’t really a worthwhile purchase.

And another red berry candle which I can’t remember the name of. I liked it though.

June You Beauty Discovery Box

I can’t believe it’s that time again – it’s You Beauty Discovery box time! This month I wasn’t too mad on the selection of products available, but I was able to find a couple I liked the look of. So let’s dive right in to the box!

First up, we obviously got the usual little booklet that tells you about the products. The extras this month were a Montagne Jeunesse Dead Sea Mud Spa Mask which I am super excited to try, and an expanding face cloth in the shape of a heart. This took me right back to my childhood when I used to get expanding flannels from Father Christmas. It was cute watching the face cloth expanding in the warm water in the sink, but the cloth itself is quite coarse and I don’t really want to use something that rough on my face, particularly not around my eye area.

The actual products I chose were the Her 300 Trecento Revitalising Hair Treatment which I haven’t used yet but am looking forward to trying, and the L’Oreal Infallible 24 hour Lip Colour in No. 110 Timeless Rose. I have used this a couple of times and will write a full post on it soon. It has unbelievably long lasting colour, but I don’t like the shimmery sparkle in it.

Did you get a You Beauty Discovery box this month? Which products did you choose? If you have written a post on yours, please leave a link below, I’d love to see your thoughts!

Dr Organic Moroccan Argan Oil Hair Treatment Serum

The Dr Organic Moroccan Argan Oil Hair Treatment Serum came in my most recent You Beauty Discovery Box. I was particularly excited to see it was a full size bottle and it sounded right up my street. This hair treatment promises to de-tangle, prevent frizz, smooth, nourish, protect and give shine to the hair. Sounds pretty amazing right?

To use the product, you towel dry your hair after shampooing and conditioning as normal. then you pump a small amount into the palm of your hand and massage it through your hair.

The first thing you will notice is the smell. I’m not keen on it at all really. The ingredients list is pretty impressive and includes Morrocan Argan Oil, Orange Fruit Extract, Clove Oil, Geranium Oil, Lemon Peel Oil, Patchouli Oil, Cinnamon Leaf Oil, and a whole bunch of other things. For me, the overwhelming scents are clove and geranium, and I have to say I don’t love it as a combination.

However, this has still become a staple in my hair care routine because of its incredible de-tangling power. I wouldn’t have believed it possible, but as soon as I apply this, the brush starts to glide through my hair. I tried brushing my hair without it the other day and it felt a bit dry and had some tangles (even using my Tangle Teezer), so I put some of this on and the change was basically instant.

I also think I see a bit of a change in how smooth and healthy my hair looks after I use this. So basically, it’s amazing! I just wish it smelt better 😦

You can find the ‘Dr Organic’ range in Holland and Barrett if you fancy giving it a try.

May You Beauty Discovery Box

I was super excited about the You Beauty Discovery Box this month because the selection of products was awesome. I wanted so many of them!

Luckily my housemate was home to answer the door because the box was too big to get through the letter box this month. I soon discovered it’s because I have a full size product!

Let’s get straight into the products I chose this month.

My top pick was Glam Glow Supermud Clearing Treatment. This mask sounded right up my street and I have heard great things about Glam Glow. This is a 10g sample. I wish it were a bit bigger, but I should still get several face masks out of this. The full size is 34g and retails for £44.99.

My second pick was a full size bottle of Dr Organic Morroccan Argan Oil Hair Treatment Serum. This is supposed to detangle and eliminate frizz so I am definitely excited to try it. I will post a full review in a couple of weeks.

As always, I got the litlittle You Beauty Discovery booklet and some samples. The samples this month were Lizi’s Granola in Treacle Pecan flavour – delicious – Caudalie Divine Legs tinted lotion, and Charles Worthington Moisture Seal Hair Healer Leave-in Conditioner.

Basically a great box this month!

Herbal Essences Smooth and Soft Shampoo and Conditioner

I have a confession. I have been way too busy to get a haircut recently. You might therefore guess that my hair hasn’t been in particularly great condition of late. As it gets that bit too long, it also starts to feel a bit dry and frizzy. I decided to try out the Herbal Essences Smooth and Soft Shampoo and Conditioner to see if it could improve the condition of my hair until I have time to see my hairdresser.

The shampoo is supposed to have a special formula which tames flyaway hair and leaves it soft and silky smooth. The conditioner is designed to add some anti-humidity protection against frizzyness. The other thing which appealed to me was the scent. I generally like the smell of all Herbal Essences products, but I particularly liked this one. The shampoo and conditioner both have a rich, exotic, fruity scent. It’s mandarin with a hint of some other tropical fruits too I think.

I would say that this shampoo and conditioner has definitely improved the condition of my hair, and only after a week’s use. My hair looks visibly healthier and feels much less dry and tangled. It’s been easier to style and I can wear it loose without it looking like a poofy mess. I’ve heard some people say these products make their hair feel greasy, but I definitely haven’t found that. They’ve just given my hair some well deserved TLC.

My top travel products

I do a fair bit of travelling (mostly for work, nothing glamorous) so I keep a whole host of products on hand to travel with. I don’t take them all with me everywhere I go, I mix and match depending on what I need. Here’s some things I think are really great.

Soap and Glory Glad Hair Day Shampoo – Everyone needs a travel shampoo and this is one of my favourites. I didn’t rate the conditioner, but the shampoo is fantastic. It has a gorgeous raspberry scent to it.

Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser – I was scent this adorable little Cleanse and Polish along with my online order from the Liz Earle website. It is perfect for travelling with, and came with a miniature cloth too.

Tangle Teezer Compact – I am such a huge fan of my Tangle Teezer that I picked up one of the compact versions recently. It is smaller and has a little cover on it to protect the bristles as well. It’s a life saver for travelling!

Boots Essentials Firm Hold Unscented Hairspray – When I am travelling and will have a nice event to go to, I like to take a little hairspray with me. I find this Boots one has perfectly good hold and doesn’t go too crispy. I like the fact that it is unscented because it doesn’t interfere with my perfume.

Lush Rose Jam Shower Gel – Everyone needs to take shower gel with them when they go away, and the miniature Lush bottles are perfect. Rose Jam was limited edition last year and smelt amazing, but you can get any of your favourites scents in this size.

Soap and Glory Clean Girls Shower Gel – A great alternative to Lush miniatures are the Soap and Glory travel size products. They aren’t quite as easy to use (they aren’t squeezy bottles) but they smell equally delicious. Clean Girls is one of my favourites.

Dove Go Fresh Pomegranate and Lemon Verbena Deodorant – Another essential is a deodorant. Your choices for small products are a roll on or a miniature spray. I don’t like roll ons particularly so something like this tiny little spray can from Dove is perfect. The scent is amazing too!

Impulse Very Pink Body Spray – I love body sprays for when you need to freshen up during the day. A hybrid between perfume and deodorant if you will. This one smells like pink grapefruit and vanilla and is really sweet and refreshing.

Body Shop Almond Hand and Nail Cream – This is my absolute favourite hand cream at the moment as it leaves my hands feeling super soft. I am so pleased it comes in a smaller size, because now I can have it at home and in my bag too!

February 2014 Empties

Simple Kind to Skin Refreshing Facial Wash Gel – I bought this little travel sized face wash to try in the shower and got on really well with it. I didn’t have to be super careful not to get it in my eyes because it’s very gentle. It made my face feel nice and clean without making it dry. I’d repurchase this.

Body Shop Chocomania Body Butter – Delicious smelling deep moisturising body butter, perfect for when you need some indulgence.

Lush Snow Fairy Shower Gel – One of the Christmas goodies from Lush. If you have a preference for super sweet scents, keep an eye out for this towards the end of the year.

No 7 Beautiful Skin Hot Cloth Cleanser – Having finished the whole bottle my conclusion is that my skin doesn’t love this quite as much as Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish, but it worked perfectly well and is a great alternative if Liz Earle is a little too pricey for you.

Pantene Pro V Classic Care Conditioner – Pretty much my all time favourite conditioner.

Garnier Moisture Match Protect and Glow Illuminating Light Lotion – This is a very watery moisturiser which I found left my skin looking a little shiny and oily, rather than glowy. I didn’t hate it but I wouldn’t repurchase it. I much preferred the Mattifying Fresh Cream.

Body Shop Coconut Body Scrub – An absolutely delicious smelling body scrub with large particles to exfoliate the skin.

Lush Let the Good Times Roll Cleanser – This cleanser smells like cinnamon and popcorn and has popcorn pieces inside. It feels like it exfoliates as well as cleanses. The downsides are, if it gets in your hair the smell lingers for a long time, and it can’t be used in the eye area so you need a separate make-up remover.

Richard Ward Chelsea Collection: Keratin Rehab – A really nice deep, thick conditioning treatment for your hair.

February 2014 Favourites

Happy March! I hope February treated you well? So what have I been loving this month I hear you ask…

Urban Decay Naked 3 – What else could possibly be at the top of this favourites post other than my new Naked 3 eyeshadow palette? I don’t really need to say a great deal, other than it has the most beautiful rose gold shadows which are shimmery, highly pigmented and long lasting. I’m in love!

Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh – The horrible British weather is starting to subside in my air of the country, which makes me feel like spring is in the air. That has inspired me to reach for my Daisy Eau So Fresh perfume again. I know this has featured in a favourites post before, but now it’s back! I adore this scent, it is a really light, fresh, floral scent which lifts my mood every time I spritz it. It isn’t the best for staying power unfortunately, but the fragrance is gorgeous.

Collection Intense Colour Supersoft Kohl Pencil – I think this has probably featured on a favourites post before, but I have recently got back into it in a big way. It is quite easy to apply (it doesn’t glide on but it doesn’t require a lot of pressure either) but more importantly the staying power is fantastic. It gives me day long perfection on the upper lid and a good few hours on the waterline without needing to reapply. This, for me, is a miracle, as I seem to have super watery eyes. Better still, it’s super cheap!

V05 Smoothly Does It Frizz Free Creme – I seem to have been drying my hair quite a bit this month (usually I let it dry naturally) so I have been reaching for a styling product more often, and this is my current product of choice. It protects your hair from heat and tames frizzy, fly away hair. I smooth a bit over wet hair before blow drying. It doesn’t make my hair feel or look greasy, and I do think it makes a difference to how “poofy” my hair is after drying.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini Phone Cover – I have a new phone (at last!) so I needed a new cover. I headed over to trusty Amazon and settled on this one, which I think is just adorable. It has handy pockets inside to keep a card or cash in when you go out for the night (saves room in your bag for lipstick and a camera!). It also opens up and folds out to create a little stand to prop your phone up while you watch videos. If you are interested in this, or a similar one, you can have a look at Style Your Mobile on Amazon.
